
Cougars Fall in OT to Delaware, 86-84

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The College of Charleston women's basketball team (8-5, 0-2) lost another one-possession game on Sunday afternoon, this time an 86-84 overtime loss to preseason CAA favorite Delaware. The Cougars have now lost their first two CAA contests by a total of three points to the two teams picked to finish at the top of the standings.
First Half
- The Cougars scored the first four points of the game, but an 11-4 Delaware run would give the Blue Hens an early 11-8 lead
- Thanks to a couple of three-pointers by Tyler Collins, the Cougars were able to match the Blue Hens punch for punch
- After one, the game was all knotted up at 19-19
- Collins' seven points in the opening period led the way for CofC, while Zoe McCrary pulled in five rebounds in the quarter to match her career-high
- The Cougars opened the second quarter with triples from Anika McGarity and Grace Abercrombie to take a 25-19 advantage
- With its top scorer (Annecchiarico) and top rebounder (Eady) both on the bench for much of the second quarter, Charleston was still able to build and maintain a lead in the period
- Leading 31-25, the Cougars would rip off a 10-3 run to extend its lead to 41-28 with 2:26 to go until the half
- The Cougars would take a 43-32 lead into the locker room, led by Tyler Collins with 12 points and Zoe McCrary with eight rebounds
Second Half
- After CofC built its largest lead of the game at 46-32, Delaware went on a 12-0 run to close the deficit down to just 46-44 with 5:00 to go in the third quarter
- The Blue Hens would tie the game at 48-48 with 3:07 to go until the fourth period
- Delaware would take its first lead of the second half with 32 seconds left in the third, but two free throws from Tyler Collins would give CofC a 55-54 lead entering the fourth quarter
- Both squads traded buckets for the first few minutes of the fourth period, but Grace Abercrombie's fast-break layup at the 7:09 mark gave CofC a 61-57 edge
- The Blue Hens would use a 9-3 spurt to take a 66-64 lead with just under four minutes to play in the game
- The Cougars got a big offensive rebound and kicked it out to Anika McGarity who knocked down a huge three to give CofC a 69-68 lead with 2:30 to go
- Both Jenna Annecchiarico and Arynn Eady fouled out late in the fourth quarter
- With just under a minute to play, Grace Abercrombie took a charge to give the ball back to CofC with the Cougars trailing 72-71
- With 20 seconds left, Anika McGarity knocked down a clutch triple to give CofC a two-point lead. The Blue Hens would tie it up with just six seconds to go, and Charleston's attempt at the end of regulation was no good. The game went to overtime tied at 76-76.
Overtime
- With Delaware leading by three, McGarity came up with another clutch three to tie the game at 80 with just over two minutes to go in the overtime period
- The Blue Hens built a three-point advantage and CofC missed a couple of threes with a chance to tie the game
- Delaware would ice the game at the free throw line and come away with the 86-84 win
Team Stats
- The Cougars were out-rebounded 58-45
- CofC registered seven blocks and six steals as a team
- Charleston went 11-of-26 from three for a 42.3 percent clip

- Tyler Collins led the Cougars in scoring with 23 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists
- Anika McGarity tallied 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting from deep
- Latrice Perkins added 16 points and nine rebounds
