The Cougars tee off seeking a third straight Top-5 team finish
RIO GRANDE, P.R. - The College of Charleston's men's golf team travels to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico to compete in the 29th annual Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue University this weekend. The tournament will begin on Sunday, Feb. 13 and will be played at the Grand Reserve Golf Club, the site of the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open with the final round on Tuesday, Feb. 15.
This is only the second time the Cougars will compete in the Puerto Rico Classic. In 2020, CofC placed 7th overall as a team. The individual medalist of this year's Puerto Rico Classic will receive an invite to the PGA Tour event from March 3 to 6.
The Cougars moved up the national rankings to No. 69 this week, the highest ranking of any team in the CAA. The field, consisting of five Top-25 teams, includes CofC, East Tennessee State, Georgia, Iowa, Marquette, Maryland, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Purdue, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
Head coach Mitch Krywulycz' Cougars are entering the tournament after a T-5 finish at the Sea Best Invitational in Jacksonville, FL. Charleston's freshman standout Kieron van Wyk led the Cougars with a T-4 individual finish and two low rounds of 70. Van Wyk is set to lead the lineup once again in Puerto Rico followed by Nevill Ruiter, Zach Reuland, Jack Parrott and Cameron Johnstone, who is making consecutive starts for the first time in his career.
