CofC placed T-7 behind six nationally ranked programs
RIO GRANDE, P.R. – The Charleston Men's Golf squad carded a 35-under 829, firing three consecutive rounds of 10-under or better at the Puerto Rico Classic this week. CofC placed T-7, behind six nationally ranked teams at the Par-72 Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande. Head coach Mitch Krywulycz' team tied No. 46 South Carolina, and edged No. 26 ETSU, Iowa, Wisconsin, Marquette and Maryland to place T-7.
All five Cougars placed in the Top 50 individually, paced by standout freshman Nevill Ruiter. Ruiter placed T-9 to snag a second career Top-10 performance. He shot a 69 or better in all three rounds to fire a career-low -13 for the tournament. Ruiter's third-round 66 that included six birdies on the front nine and seven total marked a new career-low 18-hole score for the Netherlands native.
Fellow freshman Cameron Johnstone, making consecutive starts for the first time this season, also manufactured a career-best tournament. Johnstone finished T-22 at 8-under for the week. He fired back-to-back career-low 68s in Rounds 1 and 2 to catapult up the leaderboard. Johnstone polished off his first career Top-25 finish with an even-par 72 on Tuesday.
Sophomore Zach Reuland wound up T-37. He racked up 35 pars and 11 birdies during the tournament and shot under-par in all three rounds. Reuland sandwiched a 4-under 68 in Round 2 with a pair of 1-under 71s in the opening and closing rounds.
Freshman Kieron van Wyk fired a 5-under 211 to place T-44. He shot a 4-under 68 on Monday to help CofC post a 15-under par round as a team on Day Two. Following close behind was senior Jack Parrott, who moved up eight spots in the final round with a tournament-best 3-under 69 on Tuesday.
Charleston continues its spring in mid-March as the Cougars get some rest before gearing up for the home stretch as they seek a second consecutive NCAA Regional berth.
