James Madison Outlasts Charleston, 71-63

Dimitrius Underwood recorded his first Div. I double-double in the loss

CHARLESTON, S.C.James Madison outlasted Charleston in a tight contest, 71-63, on Thursday night at TD Arena. The Cougars drop to 14-11 overall and 6-7 in league play with the loss.

The Cougars grabbed a season-high 24 offensive rebounds and outpaced the Dukes by six on the glass to stay in it, but a tough shooting night for CofC allowed JMU to polish off a victory. The Dukes scored 44 points in the paint and shot 44 percent to Charleston's 31 percent in the win.

Senior Dimitrius Underwood led CofC with 14 points and a season-high 12 rebounds as he secured his first career Div. I double-double. Freshman Ben Burnham added eight points and 10 rebounds in 21 strong minutes.

After James Madison pushed ahead early, it was Burnham who provided a spark for CofC, following an alley-oop slam with a put back bucket to pull the Cougars within four just before half. Charleston ended up holding the Dukes to just two points in the final three minutes of the opening frame but went into the locker room down 34-28.

James Madison once again used a quick burst out of the gate in the second half to push in front by 10. The Cougars closed within a possession multiple times on 3-pointers from Brenden Tucker, Reyne Smith, and Raekwon Horton.  Charleston was able to knot the score at 56-56 on a highlight reel finish at the rim from Tucker, but CofC never got over the hump to take the lead.

James Madison closed the door with tough buckets in the paint and free throws over the final four minutes.
