
Five Cougars Qualify for Regionals, CofC Takes High Point Team Sunday at Lander University Horse Show

CofC has won High Point Team on five of eight possible competition days in 2021-22
GREENWOOD, S.C. – The College of Charleston Equestrian program polished off another fantastic weekend of the spring season with High Point Team honors on Sunday at the Lander University Horse Show in Greenwood, S.C. Charleston tacked on a Reserve High Point Team finish on Saturday to round out the solid day-two event.
"The team really had to fight to stay in the lead, as the weekend's competition was extremely competitive at Lander," head coach Natasha V. McCarthy said. "I'm really pleased with our freshmen who continue to deliver. They are riding to win. Next up, we focus on hosting the final show of the year and IHSA Regional Championship."
Five Cougars qualified for Regionals in their respective events to highlight the weekend for CofC. Senior Kate Coffey won the Open Flat on Saturday to earn her spot in Regionals and followed with a sixth-place finish on Day Two. Also clinching Regional spots on Saturday were Lauren Katz and Eleanore Fish in Limit Flat and Novice Flat. On Sunday, it was Kathryn McCarthy who joined Coffey in qualifying for Regionals in the Open Flat as she punched her ticket with a third-place finish. Hailey Pendl & Tita Curtin also tacked on blue ribbons in the Limit Flat on Sunday, with Pendl cementing her position in Regionals.
CofC's High Point Reserve Team finish on Saturday was punctuated with several victories. Caroline Berg took first in a strong Intermediate Fences performance with Claire Lane snagging third. Other wins included Pendl in the Limit Flat and Amalie Ball in the Novice Flat. Sophomore Lily Borders added a win in the Introductory Flat on Day One.
Saturday additionally featured Connelly Grant and Grace Roberts seizing second and fourth in Intermediate Flat, McLean Holmes and Lindsey Johnson securing fourth and sixth in Limit Fences, Pendl, Katz and Morgan Phippen capturing first, second and second in the Limit Flat, and Morgan Hazeltine finishing third in Novice Flat.
Sunday's High Point Team finish was highlighted by victories from five Cougars. On top of Curtin and Pendl's wins in Limit Flat, Borders claimed another blue ribbon in Introductory Flat on Day Two. The pair were joined by Leah Hirsch taking first in Limit Fences and Berg's victory in Intermediate Fences.
Day Two also included Ball and Holmes adding second and fourth-place finishes in the Novice Flat competition, Holmes riding to third place in Limit Fences, and Grant and Emma Avent earning second and fifth in Intermediate Flat. Finishing behind Curtin and Pendl in Limit Flat, Phippen and Johnson tallied second and fifth-place performances, respectively.
CofC now turns to the College of Charleston Spring Horse Show at the White Horses Boarding and Training Facility on March 5. The Cougars are also set to host the IHSA Regional Championship on what will be Senior Day on March 6.
