Box Score
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Single runs in the third and fourth gave College of Charleston a 2-0 lead, but a four-run uprising by Western Carolina in the fifth sent the Catamounts on their way to a 4-2 victory in the final game of the Cougar Classic at Patriots Point.
Kelli Anne Carter singled to lead off the third, moved to third on a base hit by Mia Dittoe and scored on a suicide squeeze by Aniz Roman. An inning later, Jenna Helberg and Payton Wade roped consecutive two-base hits to give the Cougars a two-run lead.
Drayton Siegling held Western in check through four innings before the Catamounts scored all four of their runs in the fifth. Payton Lemire relieved Siegling and allowed only one hit with three strikeouts in 2.1 shutout frames.
The Cougar defense was also on display. Noel Dominguez made a diving catch on a bunt and doubled off a runner at first in the opening inning. Dittoe ran down a deep fly to right to strand two Catamounts in the fourth, and Roman snagged a line drive at second and fired across the diamond to retire a runner at third in the seventh.
Charleston is back in action next Friday through Sunday in Nashville with five games at the Purple & Gold Challenge hosted by Lipscomb.
