Coffey earned High Point Rider on Saturday
Brooklet, GA – The College of Charleston Equestrian program opened its spring season in style at the GSU Horse Show this weekend, capturing High Point Team honors on both days. The Cougars won by six on Saturday and seven on Sunday, building a 13-point lead in the Regional Standings over the University of South Carolina.
"I am so incredibly proud of this team, they performed extremely well in some trying weather conditions," head coach Natasha McCarthy said. "The team captains have been instrumental with their leadership and the team overall commitment to each other is pretty special to witness. I am excited for the teams' strong riding and I am looking forward to keeping the momentum up as we head to Lander in two weeks."
CofC set the tone on Day One with several strong performances at Evermore Farm. Senior Kate Coffey and freshman captain Kathryn McCarthy went 1-2 in both the Open Flat and Open Fences on Saturday with Coffey securing High Point Rider honors for the day.
Connelly Grant, Natalie Juckett and Lily Borders added wins for the Cougars on Saturday in the Intermediate Flat, Novice Flat and Introductory Flat competitions, respectively. Senior Eleanore Fish and freshman Maria Price also tacked on second-place finishes in the Novice Flat and Introductory Flat, finishing just behind their fellow teammates.
Additionally, CofC had a trio of Cougars place in the Limit Flat on Saturday with Morgan Phippen, McLean Holmes and Hailey Pendl taking second, third and fourth. Claire Lane and Lauren Katz added second and third-place performances in Day One's Intermediate Fences competition and Grace Roberts contributed a fourth-place finish in the Intermediate Flat to round out Charleston's results on Saturday.
The Cougars pounced on their momentum from Saturday and carried it into Day Two to win High-Point Team by seven. Coffey shined yet again, winning the Open Flat and placing fourth in the Open Fences to qualify for Regionals. McCarthy also punctuated an impressive, consistent weekend with another second-place performance in Open Fences and a third-place ride in Open Flat.
Phippen was stellar on Sunday, winning the Limit Flat followed by Holmes in second and Pendl in fifth. Holmes also competed in the Limit Fences on Day Two and cashed in a third-place performance. Other victories on Sunday included Price and Borders earning blue ribbons in both sections of the Introductory Flat.
Other notable performances that helped fuel CofC's victory on Day Two included Juckett and Fish taking second and third in the Novice Flat, Lane and Katz earning third and fifth in Intermediate Fences, and Roberts, Grant and Emma Avent placing fifth, third and third in the Intermediate Flat.
CofC continues its impressive campaign in two weeks when the Cougars head to the Lander University Horse Show from Feb. 19-20 in Greenwood, S.C.
