
Quartet of Cougars Join Record Book at Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Four College of Charleston track and field athletes entered the outdoor record book this weekend at the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge, leading the Cougars to second place in a field of 24 teams.
Kaitlynn Bailey began the assault on the record book on Friday with her time of 12.51 in the 100 placing her seventh in school history. Bailey's time is the fastest by a Cougar in four years and moved her into the Saturday finals where she had the top time in 12.74.
Bailey also led the CofC contingent in the 400, placing second with a time of 1:01.14, and joined Lily Nowakowski, Tonet Tallie and Alicia Wilson to post a time of 49.87 in the 4x100 relay, good for third place.
Tallie also entered the Top 10 on Friday, ranking sixth with a mark of 3.35m (10 feet, 11 ¾ inches) in the pole vault. The height tied her with teammate Chloe Christian for second place at the meet.
Kristen Cherry and Logan Gray became new record book entrants on Saturday. Cherry's time of 10:18.60 in the 3000 is now the sixth-fastest ever at CofC. She led a group of three Cougars in the top 10 in a field of 37, with Sophia Brown taking sixth (10:47.85) and Morgan Summey finishing ninth (11:10.07).
Gray entered the record book in two events. She had the longest outdoor shot put throw by a Cougar in five years with a mark of 12.27m (40 feet, 3 ¼ inches) to put her sixth in school annals. She finished third out of 44 athletes in the event. Her discus throw of 37.10m (121 feet, 9 inches) is good for ninth at CofC.
Rounding out the top performances on the first day was the 4x200 relay team of Nowakowski, Tallie, Asiah Gadson and Wilson, which posted the 10th-fastest time in school history (1:48.31).
On Saturday the Cougars went 2-3-4 in the 800, including Emily Dorony (2:23.18), Kacey Smekrud (2:26.24) and Meike Kalus (2:27.68). Cate Ambrose was second in the 1500 (4:45.65), followed by Rhian Purves (third, 4:52.11) and Shannon Smith (fifth, 5:00.55).
