MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- The College of Charleston sailing team finished first and sixth at the Charleston Coed Spring Fleet Race on Saturday and Sunday to highlight a busy weekend on the water for the Cougars.
The Cougars offshore team opened the weekend battling to an eighth-place finish at the Harbor Cup in Los Angeles, Calif. Caroline Williams helmed the Cougars to 61 points from 10 races including four top-five finishes. Joining Williams on the boat were Burke Anvari at primary tactician, Braden Johnson at secondary trim, Kate Schmiege at pit, Sean Groskoph at squirrel, Evan Chenard at mast and Cade Morris at foredeck. Megan Fetterley and Julianna Corso both serve as primary trim for multiple races.
Charleston raced two teams at the Charleston Coed Spring Fleet Race with the coed squad winning the regatta and the women's team finishing sixth with 55 and 99 points, respectively. Charlie McKenzie and Grace Beard delivered a dominating 14-point win in B-Division to pace the coed team to a 14-point victory in the regatta. Taylor Hasson and Adrianna Lee finished third in A-Division with 39 points.
Emily Alfortish and Nina Lubchenco finished fourth in B-Division to lead the women's team to a sixth-place performance. The duo accumulated 42 points from eight rotations including four straight top-fours to end the regatta. Emma Tallman and Sophia Browne finished with 57 points in A-Division.
The Cougars wrapped up the weekend with a ninth-place finish at the St. Mary's Team Race in St. Mary's Md. Charleston battled challenging weather conditions and stiff competition posting a 1-7 record after the regatta was shortened to a one-day event on Sunday. Pierce Ornstein, Max Anker, Axel Stordahl and Brandon Geller skippered for the Cougars with Noelle Owen, Anna Sherry, Kalea Woodard and Jack Sutton crewing. Kaelin Stock and Garrett Grenauer also made the trip as unused heavies.
Charleston was also scheduled to sail in the Navy Spring Womens' Team Race on Saturday and Sunday but the regatta fell one race short of being an official event due to weather delays and course changes.
The Cougars will return to the water next weekend with two regattas on the schedule. Charleston will host North Points #4 on Saturday at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex and travel to Annapolis, Md. for the Graham Hall Team Race on Saturday and Sunday.
