The College of Charleston Women's Golf squad leads the field after 18 holes of the 2022 CAA Championship. The Cougars battled tough conditions to post a 13-over par in Friday's first round of the league championship tournament and take a five-stroke lead into Saturday's Round 2. Elon and UNCW are T-2 at 18-over par.
Freshman Emma Schimpf was solid all day long at the Reserve Club at St. James, firing a 1-over par 73, which has her tied for the individual lead after Round 1. Schimpf buried two birdies and added six pars on a 1-under back nine to push into a tie for the lead.
"We survived the day," head coach Jamie Futrell said. "Conditions were tough. When 1-over is leading individually you know it is playing tough. Congrats to Emma on battling through all day."
Schimpf led three Cougars in the Top-8 individually. Sophomore Viktoria Hund is two strokes back at 3-over par, using an even-par front nine to pace her day. Senior Jodee Tindal is one stroke behind Hund at 4-over par and sits T-8 following 18 holes of action. Tindal birdied her first two holes of the day to set the tone for the team.
Smith Knaffle battled to shoot a 5-over par and is T-15, just four shots back of Schimpf and the co-leader. She collected 13 pars during her first career CAA Championship round. Rounding out the Cougars' scores on Friday was Mary Kathryn Talledo who is T-26 at 9-over par.
CofC seeks to close out its fourth CAA title since 2014 and earn its ninth NCAA Regional appearance in program history over the final 36 holes. Round two tees off tomorrow with the Cougars' tee times beginning at 10:10 a.m. Schimpf will be in the final pairing teeing off at 10:50 a.m. ET.
