FINAL RESULTS
DATAW ISLAND, S.C. – The College of Charleston Men's Golf team won the 2022 CAA Championship on Tuesday, securing its sixth league title since 2014. The Cougars have now won back-to-back team CAA titles by a combined 42 strokes after cementing 19-stroke victory with a 27-under 837 on Tuesday afternoon at Dataw Island.
Head coach
Mitch Krywulycz' squad clinches its ninth NCAA Regional appearance in program history and sixth since joining the CAA with the win. The Cougars will compete in the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back years for the first time since 2016 and 2017.
"I'm incredibly excited for our young team," Krywulycz said. "This is their first win together and one they took ownership of from the practice round. They knew the expectations coming into the event and played in a way that our alumni and fans can be proud of."
Freshman
Kieron van Wyk made history on Tuesday, becoming the first Black golfer in CAA history to win individual medalist honors at the conference tournament. Van Wyk gives CofC back-to-back individual winners after
Zach Reuland claimed the title last year. CofC now has six individual CAA champions with all six coming since 2015.
Trailing teammate
Nevill Ruiter by three strokes heading into the final round, van Wyk stormed back to win the tournament with a 5-under 67 on Tuesday. He finished the week at 13-under par (69-67-67 – 203) to clinch medalist honors.
Ruiter placed second, securing a 1-2 finish for Charleston. The freshman from The Netherlands heads into the NCAA Regional with seven consecutive Top-25 finishes. Ruiter shot a 10-under 206 for the week to edge the third-place finisher by five strokes. His CAA Tournament was paced by a stellar 7-under 65 in Round 2, which fell one stroke shy of matching the all-time single-round CAA Tournament record.
Reuland, the 2021 CAA champion, placed T-4 to give Charleston a trio of Cougars in the Top 5. Reuland carded a 4-under 212 with three straight rounds of par or better (71-69-72). He finished the week with a tournament-best 44 pars.
Freshman
Tim Bertenbreiter was vital to the Cougars' success. After subbing in the lineup prior to Round 2, Bertenbreiter followed a 1-over 73 on Monday with an impressive 2-under 70 in Tuesday's final round, scoring for CofC on both days. Senior
Jack Parrott finished T-20 overall with a 5-over par 221, following a pair of 73s in the first two rounds with a 75 on Sunday.
CofC now waits to find out its NCAA Regional location when the field is officially announced on Wednesday, May 4. The NCAA Selection Show airs at 4 p.m. ET that day on the Golf Channel.
