Four Cougars are in the Top 16 led by Viktoria Hund at T-1 with 18 holes left
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The College of Charleston women's golf squad leads the field at the ECU Ironwood Invitational in Greenville, N.C., after 36 sensational holes on Day 1 of the tournament Monday. The Cougars sit at 3-under as a team, leading second-place No. 39 Campbell by four strokes with 18 holes remaining.
After a 3-over 291 in Round 1, CofC fired a 6-under 282 in Round 2 to surge into sole possession of first. The 282 was the best team round score of the day among 13 teams' over two rounds. Four Cougars are in the Top 16 in what was a stellar day up and down the lineup for CofC.
"It was a total team effort today," head coach Jamie Futrell said. "The confidence they displayed today after taking it on the chin last week speaks volumes about this team. Kudos to everyone, but especially Viktoria on a spectacular 67 and MK finishing with a 31 on the back. Jodee's 33 on the last nine gave us momentum. Tomorrow should be a fun day as we try to take home the championship."
Sophomore Viktoria Hund shot a season-best 67 in Round 2 to skyrocket 15 spots up the leaderboard. Hund buried seven birdies for the round, including three on a bogey-free front nine. Hund is tied for the individual lead in medalist contention heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes.
Freshman Mary Kathryn Talledo fired a pair of 1-under 71s on Monday to sit T-4 overall just two strokes back of her teammate. Talledo now has 10 rounds of par or better this season.
Senior Jodee Tindal is T-11, following a 74 in the opening round with a strong 1-under 71 in Round 2. She moved up 12 spots on the leaderboard during the impressive second round, which was paced by a four-birdie 33 on the back nine. Freshman Emma Schimpf gives CofC four Cougars in the Top 16 at T-16. She shot a 74 followed by a 73 on Monday.
CofC's Smith Knaffle and Othilie Lied are T-29 and T-36 respectively. Knaffle shot a 73 in Round 1 to highlight her day and Lied shot a 71 in the opening round. Lied now has three rounds of 71 or better this season. Also competing as an individual is Emily Dunlap, who is T-66 after two rounds.
