
Cougars Claim 28th SAISA Match Race Crown

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston sailing team cruised to the 28th SAISA Match Race Championship in program history to highlight another successful weekend on the water for the Cougars. Charleston also placed second at the Sugar Bowl Women's in New Orleans and second at the Ashley River Trophy, hosted by The Citadel.
The Cougars posted a perfect 6-0 record at the SAISA Match Race Championships on Saturday at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex with wins against Jacksonville, Florida Tech, Georgia Tech, South Florida, Georgia and Embry-Riddle. Axel Stordahl, Lucy Klempen, Lawson Levine and Garrett Grenauer sailed for the Cougars.
At the Sugar Bowl Women's in New Orleans on Saturday and Sunday, sophomore Emily Alfortish skippered the Cougars to a 23-point win in B-Division alongside junior crew Chloe Hudgins as the duo propelled Charleston to a second-place finish in the regatta with 71 total points. Alfortish and Hudgins were dominant finishing below third only once with three wins in eight rotations. Sophomore Fredrikke Foss and senior Noelle Owen accumulated 55 points in A-Division.
Charleston turned in their second second-place performance of the weekend at the Ashley River Trophy on its home waters finishing one point between Clemson's total of 17 points. Freshmen Harrison Thomson and Brylie Schaubach were victorious in all five races in B-Division to win the division by five points over Clemson. Diego Carvajal and Marina Dryer placed second in A-Division with 13 points.
The Cougars rounded out the weekend with a fifth-place showing at the Sugar Bowl Open with 160 points from eight rotations. Sophomore skipper Emma Tallman and senior crew Roxanne Snyder placed fifth in B-Division with 68 points while junior Grace Squires and senior Anna Sherry accumulated 92 points in A-Division.
Charleston returns to the water on Saturday, October 1 when the Cougars' women's team travels to Providence, R.I. for the two-day Women's ACC Semifinals hosted by Brown.
