VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. - Emma Fortuna broke into the record book in the high jump, and the 4x800 relay team set a new school record and finished third to highlight the final day of the CAA Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach.
Fortuna cleared the bar at 1.54m (5'0 1/2") to take over ninth place in Cougar history. The freshman jumped 1.50m (4'11") in each of her first three collegiate meets before eclipsing that mark on Thursday. The height was also the best in the indoor high jump by a Charleston athlete since 2018.
The relay team of Andie Harding, Meike Kalus, Emily Dorony and Rhian Purves had a time of 9:14.76 to beat the previous school record by 17 seconds.
Sophia Brown and Cayden Crismon ran the 3000 to round out the athletes competing on the second day of the meet. Brown set a PR with a time of 10:21.43, and Crismon fell just a half second shy of her career best with a mark of 10:21.74.
The Cougars finished with 24.5 points, placing them ahead of Stony Brook and Hofstra in the team standings.
Quoting Head Coach Amy Seago
"I am super proud of this group. A big thank you goes to my staff for leading under adverse conditions and inspiring the team to make the most of their opportunity. Every championship provides an opportunity to learn more about ourselves and to grow. We had some great highlights like Luzy's win, Emily Kreek scoring as a freshman, our relays working together as a unit and PRs from Kirsten, Alicia, Kaitlynn, Emma and Sophia. We also had some moments where we faltered. But what I'm most proud of are those redemptive moments - the ones where we refocused ourselves after disappointment, dug deep and came back to prove to ourselves that we can come through when it matters."
"I am proud of the ladies showing that belief and hope fuel desire. In the end, the final scoreboard only tells you so much; sometimes there is more to the story that matters. This week we wrote a pretty good story for ourselves."
Quoting Associate Head Coach Michael Tornifolio
"I cannot describe how proud I am of the athletes. They came into the meet ready and focused. We had several new personal bests, improvement in the event rankings, a third-place relay and even an event winner. Each and every one of these ladies competed hard against tough competition."
