Privette Highlights 2023 Coug Award Winners

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Eighteen special award winners and senior student-athletes across all 19 varsity sports were honored at the 2023 College of Charleston Athletics Coug Awards on Thursday night at Patriots Point.
Junior William Privette (baseball) was honored with the prestigious J. Stewart Walker Cup, which the highest award given by the athletics department to a deserving student-athlete. The award is named after J. Stewart Walker, Jr., a 1978 CofC graduate, who was very active in athletics until his death in 1983.
Privette set a new CAA record with a 0.91 ERA in 2022 collecting 12 saves over 59.1 innings of work. The Chapin, S.C. native led the nation in ERA by nearly half a run as well as hits allowed per nine innings (4.70) and WHIP (0.78). His 12 saves also ranked among the top-10 nationally and paced the CAA. He was named the 2022 CAA Pitcher of the Year and was the first pitcher from the CAA selected as a finalist for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year award. Privette also became the first Cougar to be named an All-American since Taylor Clarke in 2015.
The other five finalists for the award included Dalton Bolon (men's basketball), Kenzie Parler (cheerleading), Rhian Purves (track & field), and Claire Campbell (volleyball).
Dalton Bolon (men's basketball), Emma Schimpf (women's golf) and Luzy Lieger (track & field) were honored as the athletic department's Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year. Freshmen Chris Elliott (men's soccer) and Alexis Andrews (women's basketball) were the recipients of the Male and Female Newcomer of the Year Award.
The Commitment to Excellence Award was bestowed on senior Jenna Snead (women's soccer) for demonstrating an exception degree of effort towards the improvement of themselves and their team.
Voted on by CofC student-athletes, the Most School Spirit Award was given to baseball's Isaiah Rainge.
The Charlie Post Courage Award was presented to Jordan Thompson (women's soccer) in honor of Dr. Charlie Post, a former team physician and avid triathlete, who was paralyzed during a cycling accident and subsequently passed away. The CofC sports medicine staff presents the award annually to a student-athlete, who has demonstrated courage and perseverance despite facing various challenges and adversity.
The Sports Performance Male and Female Athlete of the Year went to Conner Walmsley (men's soccer) and Kyra Thompson (beach volleyball) for their demonstration of having intangible qualities that led to success in the weight room, in competition and in life.
The women's golf team won the 2023 Cougar Cup, which is presented annually to the team with the most participation points in the NCAA Student-Athlete Development commitment areas of athletic excellence, academic excellence, personal development, career development and service.
The Chad Effect Community Service Award was also presented to the men's soccer program. The award, named in memory of former CofC men's basketball student-athlete Chad Cooke, is given annually to the athletic team that earns the most Cougar Cup points in the area of community service continuing Cooke's legacy of giving back to others in the community.
The CofC women's track & field team turned in the highest annual average team GPA, while the equestrian team had the most improved annual average team GPA.
Jenna Snead and Rhian Purves earned the Academic MVP Award given to the graduating senior with the highest cumulative GPA at the end of the fall prior to graduation.
