Women's Soccer Welcomes USC Upstate in Season Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston women's soccer starts the 2023 season with a home match against USC Upstate on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point.
This is the first time in 14 years the Cougars and the Spartans are facing each other. In their last contest, Charleston won 4-0.
Last season CofC posted an 8-7-3 record. Head coach Christian Michner has 11 returning players that started in 13 or more contests. This group is led by Grace Powell, who scored eight goals and 18 points and was named first team All-CAA. Mary Alexander, Olivia Freitas and Delaney Dawes each recorded four goals for the Cougars a season ago.
Sophomore Bubbles Dever was a key player off the bench for the Cougars with four assists and two goals.
Charleston returns primary goalkeeper Savannah Barron, who played in all but one game and recorded 53 saves. Katie Carrino saw action in nine games with five starts and stopped 23 shots.
USC Upstate was second in the Big South last season with a 6-2-1 conference record while finishing 9-5-4 overall. The Spartans have all-conference first-team Cora Brendle (79 saves) and Dara Russo (six goals and 12 points) returning to the squad.
