CHARLESTON, S.C. – Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Amy Seago has announced her plans to step down from her position, effective September 5.
"It is with a heavy heart that I announce after 20 years of service to the College of Charleston, the time has come for me to step away. I am grateful for my family and friends' support along the way," said Seago. "I am blessed to have a husband who has sacrificed much for me to follow my passion. Now is the time for me to return the favor and lend a hand in our family business while we pursue excellence with team Seago."
Under Seago's tutelage, Charleston athletes have captured 22 conference titles and have earned nine NCAA regional appearances. Distance runner Dena O'Brien and jumper Emily Smith were five-time Southern Conference champions, and thrower Chakosha Lance took home four SoCon individual titles.
On the men's side, Seago developed most of the top runners in Charleston history. Every athlete in the Top 10 in the 8K and all but two in the 10K were tutored by Seago, including Mackenzie Johnston, who has held the school record at both distances since 2013. Johnston was fourth at the 2014 CAA Championships and is joined by Adam Seften (2013) and Hayden DiBona (2017) as runners who have earned spots on the All-CAA team.
"We want to thank
Amy Seago for her years of service to the College of Charleston and the numerous student-athletes whose lives she impacted," said College of Charleston Director of Athletics Matt Roberts. "Amy's vision in building our cross country and track & field programs has left a positive impact on our department, University and the Charleston community. While we will miss her leadership, we are excited for this new chapter in her life and wish her nothing but the best moving forward."
Seago has been at the forefront of The College creating its own home track facility, and that dream finally became a reality when ground was broken in Mt. Pleasant in 2021.
"It's been an honor to fight passionately for the student-athletes – I care deeply about each and every one of them. I appreciate both the struggles and the triumphs in my time here. With the completion of the track, numerous academic and athletic successes and exciting momentum with our team culture, I can take a deep breath knowing I've done what I could to position the program for the future. It is reassuring to me to have in place a long-time assistant, beloved former athletes, and a few ambitious ladies who get to jump in where I left off. "
Current assistant coach
Chris Bailey has been named the Interim Head Cross Country Coach while
Michael Tornifolio has been named the Interim Head Track & Field Coach.
"Thank you to Matt Roberts and his administration for the invigorated commitment in placing student-athletes' and coaches' needs at the forefront of their decisions. True strength rises the tide for all," added Seago. "Lastly, I wish to thank my community of supporters who, over the course of my career, and especially now, have inspired me to seek the higher purpose and be all in on what matters most."
