CHARLESTON, S.C. --- College of Charleston sailing looks to build on an already impressive start to the fall campaign reemphasizing their claim as a top SAISA program.
The cougars have come out of the gates fast in September claiming five outright teams wins, a T-1st in their first Offshore race and added four more podium finishes just three weeks into the fall season. That momentum looks to build further as four regattas await – one at home and three further north along the Eastern seaboard.
Last weekend saw Charleston take three more regatta victories and tie for first in their first Offshore action, highlighted by the SAISA Match Race title and Women's Sugar Bowl victories.
This week the Cougars host the Fall Interconference as seven other programs descend up on the Lowcountry for the regatta. Charleston will have two teams compete – one Open roster and one Women's roster – across two divisions on home waters. The Cougars will be led by a crew of Brandon Geller, Brylie Schaubach, Lawson Levine, Andrea Melnik, Dilln Garcia, Fredrikke Foss, Sophia Browne, Isabella Shakespeare, Ashley Alfortish and Paige Lubrano.
Two regattas are scheduled to take place at the Naval Academy – the Shields Trophy and Women's ACC Round 1 qualifier. Charleston will sail against a field of 18 in the Women's ACC including SAISA foes Jacksonville and Florida State. Last season saw the Cougars place sixth in the Shields Trophy regatta.
In the ACC regatta, Grace Squires, Clara Murhpy, Emma Tallman, Lucy Klempen, Rowan Schanley and Emily Alfortish will represent the Cougars. For the Shields Trophy, the Offshore team will have a crew of Evan Chenard at bow, Declan Donovan at mast, Luke Tougas at squirrel, Hadley Walsh at pit, Megan Fetterley and John McCarthy at primary, Sean Groskoph at maun, Sam Rosenbaum at driver and Avi Rosan at alternate.
Charleston also sends a team north to the US Coast Guard Academy where they sail for the Danmark Trophy against a field of 20 that includes conference foe Miami. The Cougars will be led by a crew of Noah Zittrer, Chloe Hudgins, Aiden Iaconis, Benjamin Dufour, Noelle Owen and Garrett Grenauer.
