
Cougars Qualify for Women’s ACC Championships with Podium Finish to Highlight Weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- College of Charleston sailing stepped out of conference for the weekend to face some of the best competition across the country and held their own with Emma Tallman and Lucy Klempen winning their division to help lead the Cougars to a podium finish at the ACC Qualifier, clinching a spot in the ACC Championships Oct. 14-15.
Klempen and Tallman posted 61 points in the B Division as the Cougars finished with 168 total for a third place finish behind only Yale and Cornell. Grace Squires and Clara Murphy placed fourth in A Division posting 107 points.
On home waters, the Cougars took the top two spots posting 128 and 174 points as freshmen sailors Isabella Shakespeare and Ashley Alfortish posted the lowest score of the regatta – 46 points in B Division – behind 10 podium finishes across their 14 rotations. Brandon Geller, Brylie Schaubach, Lawson Levine and Andrea Melnik led the first-place coed roster with 18 top-five finishes across 28 combined races while Fredrikek Foss, Sophia Browne and Paige Lubrano sailed alongside the freshmen to help secure the second-place finish.
Charleston placed eighth in the Shields Trophy with 55 points in just their second offshore regatta of the fall. The Cougars were led by skipper Sam Rosenbaum along with crew members Declan Donovan, Evan Chenard, Megan Fetterly, Braden Johnson, Hadley Walsh, Luke Tougas, Sean Groskoph and John McCarthy.
Skipper Benajmin Dufour, alongside crew members Noelle Owen and Garrett Grenauer, placed fourth in B Division at the Danmark with 115 points. The Cougars placed 12th overall in the regatta as Noah Zittrer skippered A Division with crew members Chloe Hudgins and Aidan Iaconis.
