Cougars Host Rematch vs. Seahawks

CHARLESTON, S.C. -  The College of Charleston men's basketball team hosts UNCW for the second meeting between the programs in 13 days on Thursday at TD Arena. Action is set for 7:00 p.m.
 
STORYLINES
  • The Cougars are coming off back-to-back wins by 20+ points over Hampton and Campbell. The wins are two of three victories this season by 20 or more points.
  • UNCW won the first meeting 78-69. The Cougars held a 38-33 halftime advantage but struggled from the field in the second half, shooting 31% compared to a 48% first half performance. Ante Brzovic had a game-high 27 points to go with 11 rebounds. Jordan Crawford added ten points for the Cougars while Kobe Rodgers had seven rebounds.
  • UNCW currently holds the 19-18 all-time series record. The Seahawks currently lead the league in assist/turnover ratio, free throw percentage, turnovers per game and turnovers forced per game. Charleston leads the league in bench points per game, scoring offense, three-point attempts and winning percentage.
  • Junior Reyne Smith will be a Cougar to watch on Thursday as he approaches 1,000 career points. He sits at 996 entering Thursday. Smith set the Charleston single game three record with nine makes earlier this season vs. St. Joseph's. He is third all-time in career triples made in school history (231). The current roster features three 1,000 point scorers (Brzovic, Bryce Butler, Frankie Policelli).
  • Charleston ranks seventh in the nation in bench points per game (34.33), third in three-point attempts per game (31.8) and 14th in total threes per game (10.1). Individually, CJ Fulton ranks sixth in the country in assist/turnover ratio (4.19).
  • Ante Brzovic leads the Cougars with 13.0 points per game followed by Ben Burnham with 12.3 and Reyne Smith with 11.1. Brzovic posted 31 points, his most in a Cougar uniform, and 12 rebounds at Hampton for this fifth double-double of the season. He also leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per game.
LAST TIME OUT VS. UNCW
  • The Cougars and Seahawks traded points early with neither team taking more than a three-point lead through 13 minutes into the contest. Crawford gave the Cougars a five-point edge after back-to-back triples for a 27-22 lead with six minutes remaining in the half.  The lead held as the Cougars entered the locker room up 38-33. Brzovic led all players in the frame with 13 points while the Cougars shot just under 50% from the field.
  • Charleston went 4-for-5 from the field to open the second half. A Smith triple pushed the Charleston lead to nine at 63-56 with ten minutes left in game.
  • UNCW slowly crawled back and took a 67-65 lead with seven minutes to play, their first since 19-17 at the ten-minute mark in the first half. Charleston struggled from the free throw line, going 0-for-5 late as the fouls began to pile on. Both teams went on a three-minute scoring drought before UNCW went on a 6-0 run to take a 73-69 advantage with just under two minutes to play.  
  • KJ Jenkins led the Seahawks with 20 points followed by Shykeim Phillips with 18. Trazarien White had 17 points and seven rebounds for UNCW.
