ELON, N.C. - The College of Charleston women's cross country team turned in its best finish at the CAA Championships in nearly a decade Friday when they placed fifth in a field of 13 teams.
Caroline Himstreet led the way by finishing 21st and third among freshmen with a 6k time of 21:44.1 that moved her into seventh in school history. Himstreet also led Charleston at the Phoenix Invitational on the same course two weeks ago.
Three other Charleston women finished in the top quarter among a total of 119 runners, including Savannah Stoutt (28th, 22:11.6), Sophia Brown (30th, 22:17.6) and Cayden Crismon (32nd, 22:21.9). Jeorgi Gavalas was the second Cougar freshman to score, finishing 43rd in 22:37.1.
The fifth-place showing was the best for the women's team since taking fourth in 2015. The Cougars also finished fifth in 2013, their first year in the CAA.
The men took seventh place with 214 points and were led by Ben Ashmore in 48th place with an 8k time of 26:58.1.
