Charleston Defeats The Citadel in City Challenge

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Four Cougars finished in double figure scoring as the College of Charleston men's basketball teams earned their 13th consecutive victory over crosstown rival The Citadel on Wednesday night at McAlister Field House with a 76-61 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Charleston defense stifled The Citadel early, forcing the Bulldogs to go 3-14 from the field while causing five turnovers in the opening ten minutes. Meanwhile, an Evan Kilminster triple and two emphatic dunks from Ante Brzovic and Lazar Djokovic during the same stretch highlighted an 17-0 Cougar run to take a 21-7 edge.
  • The Bulldogs responded with a 9-2 run of their own to cut the deficit to eight at 27-19 before Deywilk Tavarez pushed the lead back to double digits with a make from deep. Charleston held on to the double figure advantage to enter the locker room up 41-27. Brzovic had 14 in the frame followed by AJ Smith with 11. The Cougars shot 55% from the field in the half, their best first half shooting performance so far this season.
  • The Cougars continued to roll in the second half as Kilminster found a cutting a Djokovic to take their largest lead of the game at 57-36. Inside a raucous McAlister Field House filled with both fan bases, Charleston maintained the momentum to secure their fourth win of the season.
KEY COUGARS
  • Brzovic recorded game-highs in points (22), rebounds (14) and assists (6) to notch the tenth double-double of his career. The senior went 10-12 from the field in a stellar showing.
  • Djokovic had a career-high 20 points and five rebounds, going 8-10 from the field.
  • Smith recorded a Cougar best 15 points and six rebounds in his return to his previous school. Taverez was the fourth Cougar in double digits with 10 points and five assists.
GAME NOTES
  • Charleston held the Citadel to a 39.3% shooting percentage and caused 15 Bulldog turnovers.
  • The Cougars banked 21 points off the Citadel turnovers and earned 12 second chance points.
  • Charleston had 35 rebounds to The Citadel's 31, their third time winning the rebounding battle this season.
  • 11 different Cougars saw action in the contest.
  • The Cougars are now 47-9 against The Citadel in the Division I era.

  • Charleston, now 4-1, will travel to Rhode Island on Sunday, November 24 to battle the Rams. Action is set for 12:00 p.m. in Kingston.
