Men's Basketball Returns to Win Column

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's basketball team returned to the win column with a 79-64 win over Northern Kentucky on Wednesday afternoon at TD Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After opening the contest with a three pointer, Derrin Boyd sank two more in the opening six minutes of play to give the Cougars an early 12-4 lead. Charleston continued to heat up from three, going 6-8 from deep to take a 26-12 lead.
  • The Norse went on a 12-2 run before Evan Kilminster drove through the NKU defense to break the drought. Boyd hit his fourth three of the half to put the Cougars up 38-27 before the Norse hit an equalizer three as time expired to make it  38-30 at the half. Boyd's 12 points led Charleston, who shot 56% in the frame.
  • CJ Fulton sank his second three of the day in the opening minutes of the second half to give Charleston a 50-37 advantage. Northern Kentucky then went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 50-43 with 15 minutes to play.
  • Justas Stonkus scored back-to-back buckets for the Cougars on a tip-in layup and a make from three to push the lead back to 14-point lead at 65-51. Northern Kentucky was 1-13 during the stretch giving enough room for the Cougars to hold on and seal their fifth victory of the season.


KEY COUGARS
  • Boyd had 22 points, his best in a Cougar uniform. He was 4-4 from three-point range in first half, going 5-7 overall.
  • Ante Brzovic notched his third double-double of the season and 11th overall with 11 points and 13 rebounds. He was four assists away from a triple-double, dishing out six on the day.
  • Stonkus was a perfect 4-4 from the field for a career high 12 points. AJ Smith matched Stonkus with 12 points of his own.




GAME NOTES
  • Charleston sank 11 triples, their second most this season.
  • Charleston outrebounded NKU 39-29. The Norse had previously won the rebounding battle in four of their five contests so far this season.
UP NEXT
  • Charleston, now 5-2, returns home after Thanksgiving to face Tusculum on December 3. Action is set for 7:00 p.m. at TD Arena.
