BOSTON, Mass. – The College of Charleston men's basketball team won their fourth straight game with a 77-73 victory at Northeastern. The Cougars remain in a tie with UNCW for first place in the league standings.
Reyne Smith moved into second all-time in CofC history with his 254th career three on his first attempt of the game and sank his second three minutes later in a tightly contested opening minutes.
The opening ten minutes of play featured seven lead changes until Northeastern took their largest lead of the game at 30-25 with just under eight minutes to play in the first half.
Jordan Crawford's third triple of the frame brought the Cougars within two at 34-32 before
Khalil London tied it at 35-35 with another three. London came alive after the make, draining a floater in the paint and a three at buzzer while getting fouled for the four-point play to send the Cougars into the locker room up 43-38.
Northeastern took their first advantage since 3:46 in the first half with a two-point 57-55 edge with 11:13 left in the second half. The Cougars took the lead back 20 seconds later and led by as much as 11 with four minutes to play, until an 8-0 Northeastern run brought the home team within two.
Two missed free throws kept it a three-point Cougar edge until a Smith made free throw created a two-possession game to seal the win.
KEY COUGARS
- Smith led the Cougars with 21 points going 6-10 from behind the arc for his fifth 20+ point performance of the season.
- Ante Brzovic added ten points followed by Bryce Butler, Crawford and London with nine each.
- Brzovic and CJ Fulton controlled the glass for Charleston with six rebounds each.
GAME NOTES
- Smith's 259th career three-pointer officially moved him into second place on the Charleston career three-point list
- Charleston outrebounded Northeastern 39-33
- The Cougars made 15 threes, the second most of the season for Charleston, and outscored the Huskies bench 33-2.
- Fulton has not committed a turnover in three consecutive games.
