Cougars Secure Outright Regular Season Title

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's basketball team captured the outright CAA regular season title with a 96-73 win over Campbell Thursday evening in TD Arena. The Cougars become the CAA's first outright regular season champion in four years and secure the first outright championship for the program since 2003.
 
Frankie Policelli hit a triple 12 seconds into the contest and Charleston never looked back. The Cougars were hot beyond the arc early with four made threes just over five minutes into the contest for an 18-7 lead. Policelli and Reyne Smith led the charge with back-to-back treys in an 8-0 run.
 
After trailing by as much as 12, the Camels responded with a 6-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to three at 34-31. Smith immediately countered the visitor threat with three straight triples, pushing the Cougar advantage to 46-31.
 
Charleston continued the surge with a 21-2 run, forcing seven Campbell turnovers in under seven minutes. The Cougars led 55-33 entering the locker room on a 9-0 run.
 
Charleston continued their offensive outburst into the second half, taking a 72-41 lead. The Camels tried to battle back with a 9-0 run while holding the Cougars to a 1-for-11 stretch from the field.
 
Smith hit his tenth triple of the night to take a 90-60 lead, the largest of the night, and secure a new school record for ten threes in a single-game.
 
Key Cougars
  • Smith broke his own program-record single game triples with 10 behind a career-high 32 points. He also reached 94 threes on the year to move into fifth place for most single season 3-pointers. Smith also becomes the only player in CAA history to hit at least nine triples in multiple games.
  • Ante Brzovic added 14 points and six rebounds.
  • Ben Burnham and Bryce Butler each contributed 12 points. James Scott rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10.
Game Notes
  • The Cougars' 55 first half points are the most in an opening half this season.
  • Charleston beat Campbell by 23 points for the second time this season, the largest win over a Division I opponent.
  • Charleston's 15 threes is the second-best output this season.
  • The Cougars dished out a season-high 26 assists led by Kobe Rodgers with a career-high seven.

  • Charleston, now 23-7 and 14-3 in conference play, will finish the regular season against Hofstra on Saturday afternoon. Action is set for 2:00 p.m. in TD Arena. Bryce Butler and Frankie Policelli will be honored for Senior Day.
  • The Cougars will then look to the CAA Championship as the No. 1 seed.
