LYNCHBURG, Va. – College of Charleston equestrian defeated the Single Discipline No. 1 team in the country and three-time NCAA/NCEA National Champion Lynchburg Saturday afternoon, 6-4. The Cougars kept to its winning ways, beating Centenary, 4-3, in the second meet of the day.
Charleston dominated in fences, taking four of the possible five points from Lynchburg. The Cougars grabbed the two final points in the flat to secure the victory.
Against Centenary, CofC took a pair of points in both fences and flat. The third score of the fences was a draw, therefore, negated, to give Charleston the win.
Caroline Berg was named MOP in the fences against Lynchburg while Hailey Pendl earned MOP in fences against Centenary.
"Today was a testament to our team's hard work and determination," said assistant coach Hope King. "They all stepped in the ring with confidence and poise, which was all I could have asked. To be able to make program history again with these girls was extremely special. Upsetting the No. 1 ranked team is just the beginning of what we can achieve."
"This weekend's weather certainly was a challenge, and being stranded in South Carolina was a bit weird for me, but I had full faith in coach Hope King and our entire squad," said head coach Natasha Vitkovic. "I'm incredibly proud of this team and the history they just made today, from cheering in S.C. to riding as one in Va. We thank Lynchburg University for hosting us, they have such a wonderful program and beautiful horses which we always look forward to competing on."
