Late Game Efforts Lead Charleston to Victory

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The College of Charleston men's basketball team returned to the win column with a 67-61 come from behind win over Campbell.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Charleston went 2-7 from the field to open the contest, giving Campbell an early 12-5 edge. The Cougars slowly found their rhythm, taking their first lead of the game at 22-19 on a Lazar Djokovic old fashioned three-point play to cap an 8-0 Cougar run.
  • CJ Fulton found a sprinting Lazar Djokovic for the two-hand slam with one minute to play to put Charleston up 33-30 entering the locker room. Deywilk Tavarez and Ante Brzovic each had eight points to lead the Cougars, followed by Djokovic with seven.
  • Tavarez scored a second chance bucket to open the second half before Campbell tied the game at 35-35. The Cougars responded, going 4-4 from the field behind makes from Tavarez, Fulton, and AJ Smith to take their largest lead of the game at 44-37 with sixteen minutes to play.
  • A nearly seven-minute Charleston scoring drought allowed Campbell to take a 50-47 lead. After trailing for majority of the second half, back-to-back Derrin Boyd triples gave Charleston the 63-60 lead with one minute to play. Clutch free throws from Tavarez helped sealed the 67-61 victory.


KEY COUGARS
  • Djokovic recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. His 15 boards are the most by a Cougar this season.
  • Boyd and Tavarez led Charleston with 15 points each. Smith joined them in double-figures with ten.
  • Fulton dished out six assists and is now two away from 500 career helpers.
GAME NOTES
  • Charleston held Campbell to 0-13 from three in the first half and just two total in the game.
  • The Cougars outrebounded the Camels 43-30.

UP NEXT
  • Charleston, now 14-4 and 4-1 in CAA play, returns to TD Arena on Saturday, January 18 to host Northeastern in the Hall of Fame game. Action is set for 5:00 p.m.
