Women's Soccer Earns Fifth Shutout of the Season Over Hampton

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Maggie Heffernan scored her first career brace to lead the Cougars to a 4-0 victory over Hampton Thursday, October 2 at Patriots Point.

The Cougar's record is now 7-4-1 overall and 3-1 in CAA play.

In the eighth minute of the game, Charleston drew a corner taken by Bella Antonio. Heffernan connected Antonio's kick before it could hit the ground and scored her first and the team's first goal of the night.

In the first 26 minutes of the game, the Cougars took six shots to Hampton's two.

With 19 left to play in the first half, Heffernan passed the ball to Faith Slimmer at the top of the box before Slimmer immediately returned the ball so Heffernan could score her first career brace for the Cougars.

Charleston was able to find 12 shots in the first half and six corners.

The College continued to dominate to begin the second half while Antonio netted her fifth goal this season in the 67th minute. Antonio and Heffernan now lead Charleston in goals scored this season, each with five.

With less than five to play on the pitch, freshman Ellie Stewart forced a turnover in the box and found herself with a wide-open shot to secure her first career goal. The goal came from Stewart's lone shot of the night in her 16 minutes of playing time.

Overall, Charleston had 24 shots and 12 corners. Avery Nassetta, Caroline Fowlkes and Slimmer led the match with shots, taking four each.

Ainsley Chunn made two saves on the night, tallying the fifth Charleston shutout of the season.

Up next, the Cougars will travel to William & Mary to play Sunday, October 5. Kickoff is set for noon in Williamsburg, Va.

Charleston returns to Patriots October 12 to host Campbell with kickoff slated for 1:00 p.m. Sunday's match will feature a breast cancer awareness theme.
