CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (13-3, 5-0) improved to 5-0 in CAA play with a 74-64 win over Drexel (8-7, 1-3) at TD Arena Friday night.
The 5-0 start is the best-ever start to conference play in program history. Charleston previously began conference play 4-0 in both the 1996-97 season (TAAC) and the 2009-10 season (SoCon).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After trading buckets in the opening minutes, Taylor Barbot connected with her twin sister Taryn who drilled a triple to put CofC in front 7-5 at the first quarter media timeout.
- Charleston built a 13-7 lead thanks to a couple layups from Tyja Beans before Drexel scored the last four points of the quarter to make it a two point game in favor of the Cougars after the first 10 minutes.
- The Cougars opened the second period on an 11-2 spurt as they took a 24-13 lead with 5:34 left in the stanza.
- CofC built a 34-20 advantage, but the Dragons closed the half on a 7-2 run as Charleston held a 36-27 edge at the break.
- Seven early second half points from Tyja Beans helped the Cougars hold a 47-34 lead at the third period media timeout.
- With a 12 point advantage (54-42) at the start of the fourth quarter, a Sophia Tougas triple and a Taylor Barbot layup gave CofC a 59-44 lead with 8:53 to play.
- From there, the Cougars never let Drexel get within 10 as they went on to win the contest 74-64 to improve to 5-0 in conference play for the first time in program history.
