
Cougars Drop Double OT Thriller at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – In a game that featured 17 lead changes and 14 ties, the College of Charleston men's basketball team ultimately fell in double overtime 112-106 at Stony Brook on Saturday night. With the loss, the Cougars move to 11-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

- The teams combined to go 5-5 from the field to open the contest, setting up an offensive powered matchup from the start.
- After a strong start, the Cougar offense fell cold leading up to the second media timeout, going nearly three minutes without a basket before a Christian Reeves old-fashion three-point play tied the game at 22-22 with 11 minutes to play.
- Stony Brook took their largest lead of the game at 34-28 with seven to play. Back-to-back makes from Colby Duggan and Jlynn Counter cut the lead to two before the Seawolves went on a 10-5 run to end the half and send the Cougars into the locker room down 46-37. Counter led Charleston with nine points.
- Chol Machot and Connor Hickman sank back-to-back threes to start the second half for Charleston. The Cougars went on an 8-2 run highlighted by a Christian Reeves slam dunk off the find from Counter to cut the deficit to three with 12 minutes to play.
- The offense continued to churn for both teams, combining 6-6 from the field through the next stretch in the back-and-forth affair.
- Chris Davis Jr.'s third triple of the half matched with a pair of Duggan free throws makes tied the game with 6:30 to play. Despite going five minutes without a made field goal, the Cougars kept it within a one possession game through the final minute by going 11-11 from the free throw line.
- A Machot dunk ended the shooting drought to give Charleston a one point lead 81-80 with a minute to play. Stony Brook responded immediately with a three before Martin Kalu sent the game to overtime with two makes from the free throw line.
- After five minutes of overtime, the contest was tied 94-94 to force a second overtime. The teams again traded points through the opening minutes before Stony Brook pulled away to take a 107-101 lead with a minute to play to hold on for the victory.
- Counter led Charleston with 28 points, seven rebounds, and six assists in the loss.
- Hickman contributed 18 points and five rebounds with four makes from behind the arc.
- Duggan dished out a career-high six assists to go with 13 points.
- Machot added 16 points followed by Davis Jr. and Reeves with 11 each.
- Reeves and Kalu each grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
- Charleston shot 47% from the field compared to 52% from Stony Brook.
- The Cougars won the rebounding battle 47-40.
- Charleston made ten threes for the fifth time this season and had a positive assist/turnover ratio for the 13th time.
- The Cougars went 30-36 from the charity stripe, their second most makes this season from the line.
- This was the first overtime contest for Charleston of the season. The Cougars 106 points are also the most scored so far this season.
