
Strong Fourth Quarter Powers Charleston Over Hofstra in CAA Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (9-3, 1-0) began Coastal Athletic Association play with a 72-55 win over Hofstra (2-10, 0-1) at TD Arena Friday night.
Heading into the fourth quarter trailing by three, the Cougars outscored the Pride 26-6 en route to a 72-55 win Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the teams traded buckets throughout the opening stanza, Sophia Tougas and Leah Philpotts combined for six straight Cougar points to put Charleston in front 15-10 after the first 10 minutes.
- Hofstra reversed the score in the second quarter and the two teams headed into the breal deadlocked 30-all.
- The Pride scored the first 10 points of the third to build a 40-30 advantage.
- The Barbot twins scored six consecutive points to bring CofC back within four (40-36) with 6:43 left in the third quarter.
- Starting the fourth quarter down 49-46, Charleston opened the final period with four straight points to take a 50-49 advantage and regain the lead for the first time since the second quarter.
- A Leah Philpotts free throw put Charleston up 55-53 with 3:55 remaining.
- From there, Tyja Beans and Taryn Barbot erupted for a combined 17 points in just under three minutes as Charleston went on to win the contest 72-55.
- Junior Taylor Barbot had 17 points, six assists and three steals.
- Junior Taryn Barbot scored a game-high 24 points while also adding seven rebounds and six assists.
- Junior Tyja Beans tallied 12 points, including eight in the fourth quarter.
- Junior Grace Ezebilo collected 11 rebounds and four steals.
- Charleston shot 45.2% from the field and held Hofstra to a 36.1% clip.
- The Cougars forced 20 turnovers, collected 13 steals and scored 22 points off turnovers.
- CofC outscored Hofstra 38-22 in the paint, and 13-2 on fast break points.
- The Cougars outscored the Pride 26-6 in the fourth quarter.
- Taryn Barbot scored her 1,288th point as a Cougar and is now 16th on the Cougars all-time scoring list.
- Charleston now has won six straight contests against Hofstra.
- "I'm proud of our kids for keeping their composure and fighting the entire game," Head Coach Robin Harmony said. "We learned a lot from this game. We'll watch film tomorrow and prepare for Northeastern. We can't take anyone in the conference lightly and I'm proud of our team for getting a win tonight."
