
Charleston Earns Hard-Fought Win Over N.C. A&T

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (16-3, 8-0) earned a hard-fought 71-62 win over N.C. A&T (7-11, 2-5) at TD Arena Sunday afternoon.
Trailing by one with less than five minutes to play, the Cougars held the Aggies scoreless for the rest of the game as they scored the contest's last 10 points to win their ninth-straight game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a layup from Tyja Beans less than 10 seconds into the game, triples from Taryn Barbot and Sophia Tougas propelled Charleston to a quick 10-0 advantage.
- N.C. A&T got on the board with a pair of free throws, but Tyja Beans picked off a pass and finished a layup on the other end to put Charleston up 14-2 and force an Aggie timeout with 6:07 left in the quarter.
- The two teams traded baskets for the rest of the period as Sophia Tougas and Taryn Barbot both drilled their second threes of the game.
- With CofC holding a 29-17 advantage after the first, the Aggies outscored the Cougars 23-9 in the second period to take a 40-38 lead into the break.
- N.C. A&T continued to apply pressure as the Aggies took a 50-43 advantage with 4:14 left in the third quarter.
- From there, Charleston closed the quarter on a 15-2 run to take a 58-52 lead into the final stanza.
- The Aggies took a 62-61 edge with 4:27 left in the game, but two straight layups and a Tyja Beans jumper put CofC in front 67-62 with 2:59 left in the contest.
- CofC continued to stifle the Aggies, holding them scoreless for the rest of the game as the Cougars went on to win by a final score of 71-62.
LEADING COUGARS
- Junior Taylor Barbot had a game-high 18 points to go along with four steals, two assists and two rebounds.
- Junior Taryn Barbot had 16 points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists.
- Junior Tyja Beans scored 11 points as she scored in double digits for the ninth-consecutive game.
- Redshirt senior Sophia Tougas tied her career-high with five triples against the Aggies.
KEY STATS
- Charleston hit eight triples and shot 36.4% from beyond the arc, while the Aggies did not make a three and went 0-for-10 on three point attempts.
- CofC forced 28 N.C. A&T turnovers, collected 16 steals and scored 32 points off Aggie errors.
- The Cougars held N.C. A&T to just 22 second half points, while scoring 33 second half points themselves.
OF NOTE
- Taryn Barbot scored her 1,417th point as a Cougar and is 12th on Charleston's all-time scoring list. She also hit her 200th career three pointer and recorded her 200th career assist on Sunday.
- Tyja Beans recorded her 100th career assist Sunday afternoon.
- Four different Cougars scored in double figures, while eight different Cougars scored in the contest.
- Charleston is now 3-3 all-time against N.C. A&T.
- The Cougars have now won nine-straight contests.
