
Women's Basketball Stumbles at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (20-4, 12-1) fell 69-57 to Monmouth (16-8, 9-4) at the OceanFirst Bank Center on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tyja Beans poured in eight first quarter points as the Cougars and the Hawks headed to the second period tied 18-all.
- Monmouth scored the first six points of the second stanza and held a 33-24 advantage with 3:35 left in the half.
- The Hawks then increased their lead to double digits as they held a 38-27 edge at the break.
- Charleston scored the first four points of the second half, but Monmouth responded with an 8-2 run to take a 46-33 lead.
- The Hawks held a 51-40 lead after the third quarter, and Charleston was never able to get within 10 in the final frame as Monmouth won the contest 69-57.
LEADING COUGARS
- Junior Taylor Barbot had seven points, six rebounds and three assists.
- Junior Taryn Barbot totaled 10 points.
- Junior Tyja Beans tallied 10 points and four rebounds.
- Junior Grace Ezebilo earned her sixth double-double of the season as she totaled 10 points and 11 rebounds. She collected double-digit rebounds for the 19th time this year.
- Sophomore Leah Philpotts contributed 10 points and went a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
KEY STATS
- Monmouth shot 49% from the field compared to Charleston's 33.9%. The Hawks also shot 44% from beyond the arc, while the Cougars shot 18.8% from deep.
- The Hawks outrebounded the Cougars 40-26.
- Charleston forced 21 Monmouth turnovers.
OF NOTE
- Grace Ezebilo earned her sixth double-double of the season as she totaled 10 points and 11 rebounds. She collected double-digit rebounds for the 19th time this year.
- Taryn Barbot scored her 1,500th point as a Cougar and is 10th on Charleston's all-time scoring list.
- Charleston is now 1-5 all-time against Monmouth
