
Tougas' Career High Six Triples Pushes No. 1 Cougars Past No. 8 Tribe

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Led by Sophia Tougas' career-high six threes, the College of Charleston women's basketball team (25-5, 16-2) defeated William & Mary (17-13, 9-9) by a final of 58-55 in the CAA Tournament Quarterfinals at CareFirst Arena on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Cougars have moved onto the CAA Tournament Semifinals for the second consecutive year and will face the winner of No. 4 Stony Brook vs. No. 5 Monmouth at 2 p.m. at CareFirst Arena tomorrow afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Led by five early points from Taryn Barbot, Charleston jumped out to 11-2 lead and forced a William & Mary timeout less than five minutes into the game.
- The Tribe closed the quarter on a 13-3 spurt and took a 15-14 advantage into the second period.
- William & Mary scored the first eight points of the second quarter, but Charleston responded with nine straight points to tie the game 23-23 with 2:33 left in the half.
- Sophia Tougas hit her third triple of the game as the teams traded buckets and the Cougars headed into the locker room trailing by one (30-29).
- Jami Hill hit a three to close the third and bring CofC within three (49-46) with 10 minutes to play.
- Sophia Tougas hit her fifth triple of the game as she capped off a Cougars 7-0 burst to put CofC in front 55-52 with 6:39 left in the game.
- Tougas then set a new career-high with her sixth make from beyond the arc as she put CofC up 58-53 with 3:19 left to play.
- The Tribe made it a three point game, got a stop and advanced the ball with a timeout with just 15 seconds left to play.
- Needing one more stop to win the game, the Cougars didn't allow the Tribe to get a shot off their final possession, and Charleston went on to defeat William & Mary 58-55 at CareFirst Arena on Friday afternoon.
LEADING COUGARS
- Junior Taryn Barbot added 17 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals.
- Junior Jami Hill tallied 11 points, six boards and two steals.
- Redshirt senior Sophia Tougas set a career-high with six threes as she went 6-for-13 from beyond the arc. Tougas' 18 points were a game-high.
- Grace Ezebilo collected a game-high 13 boards as she reached the double-digit rebounding mark for the 23rd time this season.
KEY STATS
- The Cougars forced 18 William & Mary turnovers, collected nine steals and scored 19 points off turnovers.
- Charleston held William & Mary to just six fourth quarter points.
- The Cougars scored 12 second chance points and held the Tribe to just three points on extra opportunities.
- Charleston made 10 threes.
OF NOTE
- Sophia Tougas set a career-high with six triples against the Tribe.
- Taryn Barbot scored her 1,632nd point as a Cougar and is sixth on Charleston's all-time scoring list.
- CofC has made it back to the CAA Tournament semifinals for the second consecutive year.
- Charleston is now 14-14 all-time against William & Mary.
- Charleston has earned back-to-back 25 win seasons for the first time since they did it in three straight years (1979-80 to 1981-82), and this is the first time the Cougars have accomplished the feat in their Division I era.

STONY BROOK
- Charleston is 2-4 all-time against Stony Brook, but the Cougars have won the last two matchups against the Seawolves – including a convincing 66-43 win earlier this month.
- Stony Brook finished 12-6 in CAA play and earned the No. 4 seed in the CAA Tournament. The Seawolves are 17-14 overall.
- Stony Brook ended the season losing two-straight road games. The Seawolves lost to CofC (66-43) and Campbell (55-41).
- The Seawolves are led by junior guard Janay Brantley who made the All-CAA Second Team and is averaging 12.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest. The other double-digit scorer for Stony Brook is graduate guard Diaka Berete. Berete's averaging 11.4 points and 4.3 boards per contest.
MONMOUTH
- Charleston is 1-5 all-time against Monmouth.
- This season, the Cougars fell 69-57 in their lone matchup against the Hawks on February 15.
- Monmouth finished 12-6 in CAA play and earned the No. 5 seed in the CAA Tournament. The Hawks are 20-10 overall.
- After closing out the regular season with a 83-77 win over Towson, Monmouth opened its CAA Tournament with a 72-61 win over No. 13 UNCW on Thursday afternoon.
- The Hawks are led by junior guard Gigi Gamble who made the All-CAA First Team and is averaging 14.8 points per game. Junior forward Divine Dibula made the All-CAA Second Team and is posting averages of 13.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest. Additionally, Freshman guard Madalena Amaro made the All-CAA Rookie Team.
