WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The No. 3 College of Charleston women's tennis team (16-7, 6-2) gutted out a 4-3 victory over No. 6 Campbell (7-13, 3-2) in the CAA Championship quarterfinals at the Mackesy Tennis Center on Friday evening.
With the win, the Cougars have advanced to the CAA Championship semifinals for the second year in a row and will take on tournament host No. 2 William & Mary at 6 p.m. tomorrow night. Saturday evening will be CofC's ninth appearance in the CAA Championship semifinals.
"Oziera showed incredible heart as she clinched the match for us on court two," Head Coach Angelo Anastopoulo said. "She was in a similar position her freshman year, but it didn't turn out as well, and it was great to see her have her moment tonight. Additionally, Riley Trinkle was very impressive in her first CAA Championship, and we had just enough to pull through against a gritty Campbell team. We'll get some rest and get ready for a matchup with William & Mary tomorrow night."
Charleston jumped out to a 1-0 lead and won the doubles point as the Cougars earned a pair of 6-3 wins on courts one and three. Sia Cariov and Francesca Salvato paired up to claim the victory in the No. 1 spot, while Jaiden McKee and Saige Severance worked together to earn the win on the third court.
Riley Trinkle quickly put CofC in front 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 sweep on court six. Campbell got its first point via a Cougar retirement on court five, but Jaiden McKee gave Charleston a 3-1 advantage with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory in slot No. 4.
The Camels then won courts one and three to tie the match 3-all and set the stage for the all-deciding match on court two.
Over on the No. 2 court, Oziera Ahmad found herself in a second set tiebreak with a chance to clinch the match. Ahmad dropped the tiebreak, but regained her composure and continued to battle for nearly three hours as she cruised to a 6-2 victory in the third set to claim the court and send the Cougars to the CAA Championship semifinals.
