College of Charleston's Megan Broderick opened the scoring at the 7:24 mark of the first half, as she finished an assist from Cougar defender Sydney Strong.
Appalachian (12-4-3) responded five minutes later when freshman Dana Murphy scored unassisted. The score remaining deadlocked for the remainder of the first half.
Playing in a steady rain throughout the second half, both teams traded scoring chances before the Mountaineers' Staci Smith collected a loose ball in the box and knocked it home at the 78:11 mark.
Just three minutes later, the Cougars (11-7-2) appeared to tie the game after a mad scramble in front of the goal, but the referee award a penalty kick prior to the shot. College of Charleston's Christina Hobgood was denied, however, by a diving Breland Meany.
With just seconds remaining, the Mountaineers' Jennipher Martin added an insurance goal to give ASU the final 3-1 tally.
Cougar Carolyn Morris led the shot effort with three, while three different Mountaineers had two shots apiece to lead. Charleston, as a team, out-shot Appalachian State, 11-9, with the Mountaineers totaling more saves, 5-3.
The College of Charleston ends its season with 11 wins, the most since the 1999 season, when the Cougars went 11-8-1. The team finished third in the Southern Conference, its highest-ever. The previous mark was in 1999 when Charleston finished fourth in the standings. The Cougars placed three on the all-conference team this year as Kristin Rhyne, Jamie Stewart and Claire Wigfall made the second-team list.
With the win, Appalachian's first in SoCon Tournament play since 1996, the Mountaineers advance to face the winner of the UNC Greensboro-Wofford match in the semifinals at 7:30 Friday.
