The game started in a defensive fashion with neither team able to threaten the goal. Hansell changed that at the 28:07 mark, beating several defenders and sliding the ball past a diving keeper. Following the goal, the Wildcats began the push forward and challenge the Cougar defense.
Although they made several strong attempts, Davidson was unable to find the back of the net before the end of the period. In the 59th minute of the contest, the Wildcats were called for a holding penalty in the box, awarding the Cougars a penalty kick. Charleston's Sage Martina scored the lone Cougar goal on a quick shot to the right side of the net.
The 'Cats kept battling, keeping possession of the ball on their end of the field for much of the second period. Their efforts paid off with just over six minutes to play in the game. Freshman Cass Baltz fed a corner kick into the box to sophomore John Latting. Latting headed the ball back left to Hansell who drilled the shot into the goal.
The Wildcats (1-0, 1-0) take to the road for the first time this season as they head to Coastal Carolina to take on the 20th ranked Chanticleers on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. The Cougars (0-1, 0-1) host Northwestern Sept. 5th at 7:30 in the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic at Patriots Point.
