The Cougars improve to 3-2-1, while the Commodores drop to 1-3-3.
Just 13:49 into the contest Sage Martina took a shot into the left corner of the net from about six yards out for the lone goal of the game. Ben Hollingsworth picked up the assist, his third of the season. Vanderbilt had several attempts to score during the game but Cougar senior Keith Wiggans put up wall at the net with six saves on the afternoon.
The Commodores out-shot the Cougars 14-13 and had more corner-kicks with the 6-4 edge. Martina, Jeff Files and Keion Yearwood led Charleston with three shots apiece, while Brent Richard led Vanderbilt with four shots.
Charleston placed second in the tournament with Davidson winning the event based on goals scored. Wiggans, Martina and Ricardo Diaz Granados earned All-Tournament honors.
The Cougars travel next to UNC Greensboro Sept. 27th for a 7:00 PM contest. Vanderbilt hosts Belmont Sept. 26th at 8:00 PM.
