The Cougars took just 11:44 to score the first goal when Keion Yearwood netted the assist from Jeff Files. Troy Lesesne scored just four minutes later (15:36) to take the Cougars up 2-0. Late in the first half Richmond staged a comeback, decreasing the margin to just one goal with a Colin Vint score at the 32:52 mark. The first half ended with the Cougars leading 2-1, despite being out-shot 11-6.
Ben Hollingsworth added an insurance goal at 63:22 after the Richmond goalkeeper lost control of a shot by Ricardo Granados, setting him up with the open net score.
Richmond held the shooting edge with a 21-15 advantage, but nine saves by Cougar Corbin Waller ended the threats. Spider Ken Holiday led Richmond with six shots, several of which were headers that just missed the target early in the game. Granados led the Cougars with four shots, two of which were on goal.
In the first match of the day South Carolina defeated Northwestern 3-1. Eric Szesycki, Ayo Akinsete and Ryan Deter scored the Gamecock goals, while Eric Brin netted the Wildcat goal. USC led 16-8 in shots, with Deter and Jack Cummings leading the team with four apiece. Spider Gerardo Alvarez led his team with three.
The Cougars travel to Columbia, SC next week to participate in the USC Classic. On Sept. 12th, the Cougars face Alabama A&M at 5:00 PM and Sept. 14th, the team is up against Jacksonville in a 12:00 PM kickoff.
