The loss snapped a record seven-game unbeaten streak for the Cougars and extended the Spartans' win streak to 17. The College of Charleston is now 11-5-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the Southern Conference while UNC Greensboro is 16-0-1 and 6-0-1. Charleston came out of the gate firing the first half, scoring just nine seconds into the match after Jeremy Gold took a shot from Troy Lesesne and sent it sailing into the back of the UNC Greensboro net. UNC Greensboro answered at the 11:53 mark from Southern Conference leading scorer Randi Patterson, who took it in off a Spartan corner kick. The first half would end with both teams at one goal apiece.
Both teams started the second half with several missed opportunities including a penalty kick by the Cougars that was saved from going in by the Greensboro goalkeeper midway through the half. UNC Greensboro's Scott Jones snapped the deadlock and provided what would be the game-winner at 69:20 off assists from Patterson and Matt Smith. The insurance came at 74:44 when Smith scored from Mike Richardson.
Charleston led in shots, 17-9, with the Spartans taking the 5-3 edge in saves. Phil Long paced UNC Greensboro with three shots, while George Grygar was tops for the Cougars with six shots.
The Spartans travel to UNC Wilmington Nov. 3rd to take on the Seahawks in a 7:00 PM match, while the Cougars host the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic Nov. 5-7 with the first match at 7:30 PM against Alabama A&M that Friday at Patriots Point.
