#articleRelated { display: none !important; } Northwestern defeated the College of Charleston, 4-0, in men's soccer action Sunday at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex, earning first place in its own Adidas North Shore Classic.

All four teams in the tournament ?" Butler, Iona, CofC and Northwestern ?" finished 1-1, but the NU earned the victory on goal differential following its four goal outburst against the Cougars.

The College of Charleston took second place while Iona finished third and Butler rounded out the field in fourth.

In a game in which the Cougars controlled much of the play, it was Northwestern which was able to put the ball in the net. Charleston outshot the Wildcats, 17-9. Gerardo Alvarez (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) opened the scoring in the 30th minute. Freshman David Roth (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) doubled back to collect a ball, then sprung Kevin Earnest (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) up the touchline, where he served a perfect ball into Alvarez who headed it home.

Thirteen minutes later, Earnest went on another run and was taking down in the box, earning a penalty kick that Eric Brin (Westlake, Calif./Westlake) put home to make it 2-0 at the half.

Brad Napper (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) added NU's third goal in the 63rd minute off a set piece service from Brin and Alvarez scored the final goal on a laser beam to the upper corner in the 69th minute. Roth earned the assist on Alvarez's second goal.

Cougars Tony Myers, Scott Milroth and George Grygar earned All-Tournament team honors.

The Wildcats (2-1) return to action next weekend when they host DePaul, UC Irvine and UW-Green Bay in the Best Western Lakeside Classic beginning at noon on Friday, Sept. 10. The Cougars (1-1) travel to Columbia, SC Sept 10 to face Bucknell at 5:00 PM in the USC Soccer Classic.
