The Cougars improve to 3-3-1, while the Quakers lose for the first time this season to go to 4-1 on the year. The Cougars earn the tournament title with a 1-0-1 mark this weekend, beating out USC and Pennsylvania, who both had 1-1 records. Loyola finished the tournament with a 0-1-1 mark after falling to the Gameocks this afternoon.
Darren Toby scored first for Charleston just 1:52 into the match. Gold set up his corner kick perfectly to Toby, who headed the ball into the back of the net. Red-shirt Freshman Matt Morris turned in the game-winner at 11:56, taking the ball in from the right post. Wes Knight picked up the assist on the play.
Late in the first half at 44:42, Pennsylvania avoided the shut-out as Andrew Ferry took a corner kick into the back of the net to make the score 2-1. The Cougars responded in the second half at 61:42, when Gold went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and won to send the game to the final 3-1 score.
Charleston out-shot Pennsylvania 14-8, while the Quakers held the 9-3 advantage in saves. Toby led the Cougars with four shots, while eight different Quakers each had a shot in the game.
The College of Charleston travels to Conway, S.C., Sept. 23rd- Sept. 25th to take part in the Coastal Carolina Tournament. The Cougars face Brown the 23rd at 5:00 PM, before taking on the Chanticleers the 25th at 5:00 PM.
