The Cougars go to 4-3-2 on the year, while the Chanticleers go to 3-4-1 overall.
Coastal Carolina's Kevin Van Den Berg beat goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap with a shot that went into the lower right corner of the net in the ninth minute to give them the brief. In the 10th minute, South Carolina transfer Grant Gurthrie took a free kick from Jeremy Gold and headed the ball in to knot the game up with 80 minutes left to play.
Neither team could capitalize on opportunities through regulation and the game went into extra periods. Coastal Carolina out-shot Charleston 6-0 in the extra 20 minutes but a stingy defense prevented the game-winning shot.
The Chanticleers out-shot the Cougars 18-8 for the game, with Charleston coming away with the 4--1 advantage in saves. Matt Morris, Darren Toby and Gold paced the Cougars with two shots apiece, while Joseph Kabwe and Lachlan Cahill led Coastal with three shots each.
Hunter Gilstrap earned MVP honors, while Toby, Keion Yearwood and Drew Fuzy were named to the All-Tournament team.
The College of Charleston hosts Appalachian State Oct. 1st, in a 6:00 PM game to mark its first Southern Conference match-up of the season.
