The Cougars, who have won the last three matchups and are unbeaten against USC since 2001 (4-0-1) improved to 2-1-0 on the season.
The Cougars swept the season-series with the Gamecocks last fall winning 3-0 in Charleston and 3-2 in Columbia in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
"This was a very hard-fought, tough game tonight," said Cougar coach Ralph Lundy. "Our young team stepped up to the challenge and played great against another very good South Carolina team"
South Carolina, which dropped a 2-1 double-overtime decision at Clemson on Friday, fell to 0-2-0.
Gold, who had six of Charleston's nine shots, scored a penalty kick goal at the 35:45 mark of the first half. USC was called for a hand ball in the box, which set up a penalty kick, and Gold knocked the PK into the lower right corner.
"Sometimes it's called and sometimes it's not," USC coach Mark Berson said. "That happens and you have to deal with it. I thought the guys dug in and showed courage. They didn't give up. Defensively, I feel like we've been pretty sound. We just need to create more chances (offensively) to take the pressure off of ourselves."
Gold scored three times in Charleston's season-opening 5-1 win over Western Michigan on Friday. The junior from Euless, Tex. has already equalled his career-high for most goals in a season. Gold tallied four scores in each of his first two seasons.
Goalie Hunter Gilstrap blanked the Gamecocks while recording four saves. Gilstrap has allowed just two goals in over 208 minutes in net this fall.
The Cougars take on Duke in the Duke/adidas Classic on Friday at 7:30. The Cougars play N.C. State in the Classic at noon on Sunday.
"Our schedule is a huge challenge," added Lundy. "Every game is tough, but that's the level of competition we play and have to perform well against if we're to meet our goals."
