Western Carolina Edges CofC, 2-1

Senior Caroline Wertis' second half goal was not enough to lift the College of Charleston women's soccer team to victory over Western Carolina Friday night in Cullowhee, N.C. Western Carolina defeated CofC, 2-1.
CofC falls to 5-6-2 overall and 3-2-0 in the Southern Conference, while Western Carolina improves to 8-5-2 overall and 4-1-1.
Wertis headed home a free kick from freshman Alanna Jordan at the 56:19 mark for the Cougars' only goal of the match.
Western Carolina scored its first goal of the match less than a minute into the second half. Shanna Schmoker headed home a free kick from Jenny Matteson at the 45:51 mark to give the Catamounts the advantage, 1-0.
Western Carolina added to its lead with a goal from Lauren Atkinson in the 55th minute to make the score, 2-0. Nikki Collins attempted a shot, that was saved by CofC sophomore goalkeeper, Erin Smith, but Atkinson netted the rebound to give the Catamounts the two goal advantage.
Smith had six saves in the match for the Cougars, while Kelly Gulledge had three saves for the Catamounts.
