The College of Charleston took four of two singles matches and earned the doubles point to defeat UNC Greensboro, 5-2, in women's tennis action this afternoon at the tennis center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
The Cougars improve to 7-7 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Conference, while the Spartans drop to 4-8 and 1-3.
Charleston won its first doubles match with an 8-3 win by Jenna Marks and Amanda Becker over Whitney Miles and Erica Zabkar at number three, but lost the second one, an 8-6 setback at number one. The doubles point was decided by the third match as Maxine Capewell and Ashley Finnegan edged Lourdes Moran and Sophie Rychlik at number two, 9-7.
The Cougars used that momentum to take the wins at numbers two, three, five and six singles to clinch the win. After falling in the first set at number two singles, 6-3, Chelsea Albertz rebounded to take the next two, each by a 6-0 score. Both Payten Ellington and Marks won their first sets in close 7-5 scores but handled the pressure well as Ellington took the eventual 7-5, 6-2 win at number five and Marks took the 7-5, 6-4 win at number six.
The Cougars host Elon this Sunday, March 19th at 12:00, while the Spartans travel down to Georgia Southern for a match the same date and time.
