SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Second-half goals by Drew Fuzy and Kareem Yearwood move the College of Charleston to a 2-0 victory over Wofford in Southern Conference men's soccer action at Snyder Field Tuesday evening.
The shutout ups the Cougars record to 9-4-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the league. The Terriers fall to 4-10-1 and 0-6-1 in the SoCon.
Despite its 8-7 shot advantage in the first half, Wofford was unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities. CofC had the final advantage with 17 shot to the Terriers' 15. Goalkeeper Corbin Waller made seven saves in the win.
Midway through the second half Yearwood, a sophomore forward, put the Cougars on the board. Matt Morris crossed the ball in from the left side of the penalty box. Yearwood kept the ball and shot from the near post to put Charleston up 1-0 (60:45). The goal, his 10th of the season, keeps him atop the SoCon standings in goals and goals-per-game.
Seventeen minutes later Zach Prince would pass the ball out to Wes Knight in the right corner. Knight then crossed to Fuzy who slipped the ball past Wofford goalie Joey Taylor for the final goal, his first this season (77:54). Knight's assist, his fifth, will move him into a tie for third in the conference.
Fuzy and Yearwood along with Grant Guthrie led the offensive attack for the Cougars with three shots each. The shutout is the seventh this season for Waller, a senior from High Point, N.C.
CofC will return home to host Appalachian State on senior night at 6 p.m. Sat., Oct 27, at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
