A goal by Thomas Campbell midway through the second overtime period pushed UNC Greensboro over the College of Charleston, 2-1, in the semi-final round of the Southern Conference Men's Soccer tournament tonight at UNCG Stadium.
"It was a tough game and we played with a lot of heart," said CofC Head Coach Ralph Lundy. "Corbin Waller stood out as our team leader once again."
The Cougars end their season 13-5-1. The Spartans improve to 11-7-2 and will go on to face top-seeded Furman in the championship match Sun., Nov. 18.
Junior midfielder Casey Gold converted a penalty kick to open the scoring and put the Cougars up 1-0. After UNC Greensboro was whistled for a foul in the penalty box at the 11:02 mark, Gold found the net for his third goal of the season.
The Spartans equalized with less than five minutes remaining in regulation when Corey Maret sent a blast on goal from the left wing. Campbell redirected the shot past the Cougars' Corbin Waller to even the match and send it into overtime.
The Spartans' E.J. O'Keefe blasted a pass towards the box from 40 yards out. After the ball was stripped from Waller, Campbell collected the ball and sent it into the wide-open net for the game-winning goal (103:42).
UNC Greensboro held a 20-6 advantage in shots on the evening. Waller stopped five shots for the Cougars while Janda notched four saves in goal for UNCG.
