
Helmig, Yearwood Lift Cougars to 2-0 Victory Over Charlotte

CofC men's soccer team shutout the Charlotte 49ers 2-0 in the championship match of the Nike/Aaron Olitksy Memorial Soccer Classic, Sun., Sept. 9, at Patriots Point Field in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
“In the second half, the team made a clear improvement,” said CofC head coach Ralph Lundy. “We put all the hustle into the game we could. The result was we got the win.”
The Cougars held a 4-2 shot advantage at the end of the first half, including a free kick from midfield by Miles Alden-Dunn that was snagged by Charlotte goalie David Martin. CofC midfielder, Grant Guthrie's goal in the sixth minute was called back after the Cougars were caught offsides.
The game-winning goal came in the 75th minute when Jake Helmig headed his first career goal from seven yards out off an assist from Guthrie. Kareem Yearwood added to the Cougar lead with his fourth goal of the season, off a double assist by Guthrie and Sean Bateau (14:06).
Yearwood was named the tournament MVP.

The win lifts the Cougars to 4-0 on the season. CofC will be back in action Fri., Sept. 14, when they face Liberty in the UNC Wilmington Tournament in Wilmington, N.C., at 5:00.
