College of Charleston senior Jill Furstenburg has been named the Southern Conference women's basketball player of the week for January 15.
Furstenburg led the Cougars in scoring in a pair of victories last week, tallying 21 points against Furman (Jan. 12) and 18 against Wofford (Jan. 14). The Whitehouse, N.J. native shot 67 percent from beyond the three-point arc, going 4-for-6, and she was 9-for-10 from the charity stripe. Furstenburg leads Charleston this season and ranks second in the Southern Conference with an average of 12.9 points a game. She has posted double-digit scoring in 12 of 16 games this season, scoring more than 20 in two contests and more than 15 in six.
Following a slow start to the season, Charleston (9-7, 5-1) has rebounded to win four consecutive games and eight of its last 10 contests. CofC currently sits in a tie with Georgia Southern for second place in the SoCon standings. Furstenburg and the Cougars' defense are stifling opponents by allowing just 54.1 points per game (17th in Division I) and holding the opposition to 33.6 percent from the floor (fourth in Division I).
Other top performances this week were turned in by Chattanooga's Alex Anderson, Davidson's Honna Housley, Furman's Lee Stephens, Georgia Southern's Tiffany Brown, UNC Greensboro's Gini Grimsley, Western Carolina's Lauren Powell and Wofford's Kelsi Koenig.
